“La Cooperativa” – Conversion of the Former Olive Mill in Nueva Carteya
“La Cooperativa” – Conversion of the Former Olive Mill in Nueva Carteya
This project aims to transform the former Nuestra Señora del Rosario olive mill, currently unused, into a multifunctional space that supports local development, promotes sustainability, and contributes to the revitalization of Nueva Carteya’s urban heritage.
The proposal focuses on restoring and enhancing the existing complex while preserving its architectural identity and distinctive industrial character. The intervention incorporates contemporary standards of accessibility, comfort, and usability, ensuring that the site retains its historical memory while adapting to present-day multifunctional needs.
The project seeks to reactivate the former cooperative complex through the enhancement of its built environment and the creation of a new, versatile public space. A large public square is proposed for the outdoor area, designed to accommodate a wide range of activities, including markets, fairs, and cultural events. Continuous paving surfaces allow for flexible use, while landscaping is concentrated along the edges to integrate the surrounding environment without compromising functionality. Seating areas and urban furniture are also incorporated to encourage public use and social interaction.
The rehabilitation of the former olive mill combines the creation of public space with the development of interior facilities dedicated to workshops, conference rooms, exhibitions, and other community-oriented activities. The project also prioritizes energy efficiency, sustainable materials, and a fast construction process within a limited budget. Thermal insulation and renewable energy systems will be implemented to reduce long-term operating costs, while locally sourced and recycled materials will be used wherever possible to ensure sustainability and ease of maintenance.
